Beta-Caryophyllene

Beta-caryophyllene (also known as caryophyllene) is a hemp terpene prevalent in most strains. Known for a signature spicy herbal notes with hints of wood, caryophyllene is commonly used as a food additive. Caryophyllene is found naturally in hops, cinnamon, pepper and herbs like oregano or basil. 

The Beneficial Effects of Beta-Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene has been shown in animals to have pain-relieving effects and is used in salves and topicals as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling. It is also being studied as a therapeutic terpene, including uses to address swelling from physical trauma and edema from high blood pressure.

Caryophyllene may serve a role as a viable alternative to opioids.

Scientific evidence has been seen where caryophyllene has protected the cells of the gastrointestinal tract and currently research is digging into potential benefits for treating ulcers. In in past 10 years, caryophyllene has gained scientific attention following the discovery of its ability to directly activate cannabinoids receptors.

Anxiety and depression has been shown to improve in some through the effects of caryophyllene. Studies show that molecules like caryophyllene, which target the CB2 receptor, can influence depression and anxiety. The interaction and synergy between terpenes and cannabinoids known as the “entourage effect” is known to produce a net result closer to multiplying, rather than just adding, the results of compounds consumed individually.
