GMO Cookies is named for Garlic Mushroom Onions, and it smells exactly like that: raw garlic and diesel over a coffee-ish earthiness, with barely a trace of the cookie sweetness in the name. Dispensaries often relabel it Garlic Cookies to avoid the genetically-modified association, but the aroma is the same either way.

A smell that reads as a defect is a strange thing to build a following on. GMO Cookies did it anyway, because under the funk is a heavy, deeply relaxed body high that experienced smokers rate highly, and the aroma works as a filter: the people who want this strain are the ones it does not put off.

GMO Cookies is a slow, heavy strain. Across roughly 590 Leafly reviews, relaxed leads at 74 percent, one of the highest in this whole set, then euphoric and happy at 50 and 49, with about a third reporting sleepiness. The build is gradual: a mild head lift, then an hour or so later a body weight that settles in and stays.

It ends in the couch, and often in sleep, so it belongs in the evening and nowhere near a task list. Two things stand out in the negatives. Headache is unusually common here, reported more often than with most strains, and the THC is genuinely high, so this is not a beginner's strain. Dry mouth is the other frequent note. If garlic and diesel sound good rather than alarming, this is aimed at you.

GMO Cookies is savory, not sweet: raw garlic and onion, a heavy diesel note and a bitter coffee undertone, with a vague earthy plum sweetness underneath that only registers after the garlic. The smoke is smoother than the smell, and the exhale is where a little of the Cookies sweetness finally shows up. It is a polarizing jar, and its fans want it for exactly the notes that put other people off.

GMO Cookies has a loud measured panel: Myrcene, Limonene and Caryophyllene all read high, with a real amount of Humulene and Pinene behind. Those explain the earthy, citrus-rind and peppery base of the smell.

They do not explain the garlic. That savory, sulfurous note, the one the strain is named for, comes from trace compounds a standard nine-terpene panel does not measure, most likely sulfur volatiles related to the ones in actual garlic and onion. It is a clean example of the panel accounting for the background of an aroma while missing the foreground entirely. Read the numbers for the base notes and trust your nose for the rest.

GMO Cookies THC runs from about 20 to 33 percent in our records, and the lab-measured sample came in near 29, high and consistent with the strain's reputation. CBD and CBG each sit near one percent. This is one of the more potent strains in this group by a clear margin.

Here the number is worth respecting. The combination of high THC and a deep, sedating body effect is a lot for a light or occasional smoker, and the dose that suits an experienced consumer in the evening is not the dose to start with.
