Ken Estes bred it in California around 2003 from Purple Urkle and Big Bud, and it has been the reference point for the type ever since.

Granddaddy Purple is a short, pleasant lift that turns into a long night. The front end is a dreamy, slightly floaty head haze, euphoric and calm; within half an hour or so it gives way to a heavy, couch-locking body weight that most reviewers describe as the main event. It is an evening strain in the fullest sense: it ends the evening. A modest amount is a comfortable, drifting wind-down; more moves fairly quickly to foggy and then to asleep.
