Northern Lights

Northern Lights was famous before most strains on the shelf next to it existed. It came out of Afghani indica stock crossed with a Thai sativa, was stabilized by Dutch growers in the mid-1980s and spent the next forty years as the plant people point to when they want to explain what indica is supposed to mean.

A strain that old usually earns its reputation on a story, a first act, some cultural moment. Northern Lights is remembered for almost none of that. It is remembered for what it does after the first few minutes, and it does one thing.

Smoked or vaporized, Northern Lights is commonly described as quick to arrive, and the arrival is physical. In Leafly's roughly 6,100 reviews, 60 percent mention feeling relaxed and 39 percent mention feeling sleepy, which is a high sleepy share and tells you where the strain is pointed. Euphoria and a mild mood lift show up too, around 48 and 50 percent, but they sit on top of the body effect rather than leading it. Older write-ups call it a "two hit and quit" strain. That is lore, not a measurement, but it matches the shape of the reports.

The thing that kept Northern Lights around is that landing, not the ride into it. That makes it an end-of-evening strain and close to useless earlier in the day, because the body weight does not really negotiate. Reports describe a small amount doing most of the work, with larger amounts mostly making sleep arrive sooner rather than changing the character of the high. Dry mouth is the common complaint at about 30 percent of reviews, with dry eyes, dizziness and a small share of anxious reports well behind it. Edibles are a different clock entirely, with a slower onset and a longer tail, so plan the dose earlier than feels necessary.

The jar leans earthy and sweet with a resinous pine note behind it and a pungent edge that fills a room faster than the bud size suggests. Broken apart, the pine sharpens and a faint lemon comes through. On the exhale most descriptions land on earth and sweetness rather than anything bright. It is not a loud or fruity profile. It smells like an old-school indica, which is more or less the point.

Northern Lights' measured terpenes are led by Myrcene and Caryophyllene at roughly a fifth of a percent each, with Limonene near a tenth and smaller amounts of Humulene and Linalool. That is a modest total and a fairly even spread, not a spike.

One thing that panel does not do is explain the sedation. Myrcene often gets treated as a sleep switch, but the amount here is not unusual and the link between any single terpene percentage and how a person feels is not settled science. The earthy and piney aroma is consistent with Caryophyllene and the trace Pinene, though minor compounds the standard panel does not capture may contribute as much to what you actually smell. Treat the numbers as a way to compare one jar of Northern Lights to another, not as the reason it puts you to sleep.

Our records put Northern Lights THC across a wide band, from the mid teens into the low thirties, with the measured samples we have sitting in the high teens to low twenties. CBD is negligible. CBG shows up near one percent, with CBN much lower at around a twentieth of a percent.

That wide THC band is the useful lesson here. It does not mean Northern Lights got stronger over the decades. It means a lot of different cuts and grows wear the name, and the number on any given package tells you about that package, not the strain. It also barely matters for this one. Northern Lights is not chosen for a ceiling. It is chosen because a modest amount reliably ends the evening, and a higher-testing batch mostly just gets there faster. Buy the well-cured jar over the higher number.
