Sour Diesel

Sour Diesel is one of the last great names from the era before cannabis kept records. It came out of the East Coast underground in the early 1990s, and because that market ran on cash and word of mouth, its parentage was never written down. Chemdawg 91 crossed with Super Skunk is the usual guess, but there are three or four others.

It survived on character. The acrid fuel-and-skunk smell that puts some people off is exactly what its devotees have kept it around for, through thirty years and a place on more than one greatest-strains list.

Sour Diesel is quick and bright and stays in the head. Across roughly 15,000 Leafly reviews from more than 50 sources, happy leads at 57 percent, then uplifted, euphoric and energetic in the forties and fifties, with almost no one describing a heavy body. It is a morning strain, and several accounts call it a genuine coffee substitute for the way it announces itself.

The other side of that brightness is that it can run fast. Paranoia turns up in about one review in eleven, the highest in this group, and a restless, racy head shows up alongside it, more so at larger doses. Dry mouth leads the minor complaints at 31 percent. If energetic strains tend to get ahead of you, meet this one with a small first dose. It has no place in the evening, and none for anyone who wants to feel settled.

Sour Diesel earns its name. The jar is fuel first, sharp and almost solvent, then sour skunk and a bite of lemon. Ground up it gets louder. The flavor is the same, acrid and citrus-sour through the exhale. It is a polarizing smell, and the people who love the strain love it for exactly this.

Sour Diesel's measured panel is led by Limonene, past four tenths of a percent, then Caryophyllene and Myrcene. That is a citrus-forward reading, which fits the lemon in the aroma.

It does not explain the fuel. The diesel note that defines Sour Diesel is not one of the nine terpenes a standard panel reports; it comes from compounds most labs do not measure, likely including sulfur compounds. A panel tells you how one Sour Diesel jar compares to another. It does not tell you how the strain will feel, and it does not capture most of what your nose is doing.

Sour Diesel THC runs from the low teens to the mid twenties in our records, with the lab-measured samples near 21. CBD is a trace. Some of our CBN readings are implausibly high and are not used.

The strain's reputation for being very potent is more about speed and loudness than the number. A mid-range, well-cured batch delivers the character with less of the racy edge.
