Pineapple Express

Most people who know the name Pineapple Express know it from a movie, not a dispensary. The 2008 film put it in front of an audience that had never set foot in one, and it has been a household phrase since.

The movie played it as rocket fuel. It is not that. Almost everyone who describes the actual flower, the people who sell it included, says so.

What it is instead is a friendlier thing, and arguably a more useful one.

The Leafly numbers, from about 6,000 reviews, describe a friendly mid-strength hybrid: happy well out front at 60 percent, then uplifted, euphoric, energetic and relaxed spread from the high thirties to the high forties. Our records call it an afternoon strain, and more than one account specifically notes no real sleepiness.

What is left once the hype is set aside is an easygoing all-rounder, good company for a meal, a walk, an afternoon with people, with a dependable appetite bump and enough lift to stay engaged without much of an edge. It suits someone who wants pleasant and uncomplicated rather than strong or unusual. It will disappoint anyone chasing the movie, and anyone after a one-directional high in either direction. The minor complaints are the standard pair, dry mouth and dry eyes near 25 and 13 percent, with paranoia and anxiety each around one review in twenty.

Pineapple Express is a fruit stand with a pine tree behind it: fresh pineapple and mango up front, resinous pine underneath, a green-apple brightness at the edges. Grinding it pushes the pine forward to cut the sweetness. Pineapple leads on the way out. It is a genuinely fruit-forward profile and one of the reasons the strain outlasted its novelty.

Pineapple Express has a strange measured panel for a fruity strain. The records lead with two of the less fruity compounds, Caryophyllene past half a percent and Humulene, with little to no measured Myrcene or Pinene. That is not what the pineapple nose would predict.

A panel weighted toward Caryophyllene and Humulene does not obviously produce a tropical smell, which means the fruit is coming from compounds outside the standard nine that most labs report, esters among them most likely. It is a clean reminder that a terpene readout describes part of the chemistry, not the whole aroma and certainly not the effect.

Given a reputation built on a movie about extraordinarily strong weed, the measured picture is almost funny: mid-range and unremarkable, our samples near 17 percent against a 16 to 27 reported spread. That matches how the flower actually behaves.

The number was never the story with Pineapple Express. Buy it for the flavor and the company, not the figure on the label.
