How to Get a Medical Cannabis Card In DC

DC residents who are at least 21 years of age may self-certify on their patient application that they will use cannabis purchased from a licensed dispensary for medical purposes in lieu of securing a recommendation from their healthcare provider. Registrations issued by September 30, 2022, are valid for two (2) years from date of issuance.

Effective August 8, 2022, DC residents may immediately purchase medical cannabis from licensed dispensaries using their temporary patient registration approvals. Registrations are free through December 8, 2022.

**Eligible DC Residents Can Now Purchase Medical Cannabis Immediately Upon Applying Online or at a Legal Dispensary**

DC residents must submit an Adult or Minor Patient Application. Required items for the Adult Application include:

  1. Social Security Number or a copy of a sworn affidavit stating lack of one.
  2. One (1) current face photo, 2x2.
  3. One (1) copy of their DC license OR
    • One (1) proof of DC residency and
    • One (1) copy of government-issued photo ID
  4. A healthcare practitioner recommendation dated within two (2) years of the application submission date if not self-certifying. Applicants 21 years of age may self-certify in lieu of providing a recommendation.

Applications may be submitted:

  • In-Person. (All applicant types)
    • Walk-in registration is available Monday-Friday, between 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at ABRA's office inside the Reeves Center located at 2000 14th Street NW, Suite 102A (First Floor), Washington, DC 20009.
    • Applicants are encouraged to submit their application online prior to visiting the office to expedite processing.
    • Approved applicants will receive a digital and physical registration during their visit.
  • Online. (Adult applicants only)
    • Complete and submit the Adult Patient Application. If self-certifying, select “Self-Certification” under “Certification Type”. If entering a recommendation number, select “Recommendation” and enter the recommendation number and your healthcare provider’s first and last name in the fields immediately below.
    • Applications must be completed in one sitting. Applications cannot be saved and returned to at later time.
  • By Mail.
    • Mail a completed application to ABRA, 2000 14th Street NW, Suite 102A (First Floor), Washington, DC 20009.

Valid Period and Fees

  • Patient and caregiver registration fees are waived through December 8, 2022. Previously paid fees are non-refundable.

  • Patients who were issued a one (1) year registration on or after November 10, 2020 may request a new registration valid for two (2) years at no cost. Requests may be made in-person, online, or by emailing medicalcannabis@dc.gov
